Migration Observatory

Funding Institution: Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo

Partners: Fondazione Collegio Carlo Alberto (Turin)

Start/end date: 1 January 2016 – currently ongoing

LdA Researchers involved: Tommaso Frattini (coordinator)

Goals: the main objective of the observatory is to study analytically topical issues on migration, such as the economic and social impact of immigration on receiving and sending countries or the implications of different migration policies, from an international and cross-disciplinary perspective. Then, it aims to construct a critical  mass of academic knowledge in order to increase the visibility of Collegio Carlo Alberto and Centro Studi Luca d’Agliano in the policy debate.

1 – Promoting analytical knowledge on topical issues such as the wider economic and social impacts of immigration on receiving and sending countries and the implications of different migration policies, from an international and cross-disciplinary perspective;

2 – Strengthening research links between the two institutions, and facilitating interdisciplinary migration research;

3 – Positioning Collegio Carlo Alberto/LdA as central actors in migration research, with the two-fold objective of becoming highly visible in the policy debate, and construct a critical mass of academic knowledge which facilitates access to international research grants.

Overview

Immigration is once again at the forefront of policy debate in many European countries. Public opinion concerns are caused not only by the recent refugees crisis but also by the increases in intra-EU mobility and in the inflows of economic migrants in the Union. Using data from the latest editions of the European Labour Force Survey, the Migration Observatory Annual Reports provide fresh and updated evidence on the economic integration of immigrants in Europe, focusing especially on their labour market outcomes.
